Of those, 729 have been released or transferred,\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2011\/01\/26\/ghailani-sentence-shows-federal-courts-work-reveals-extent-of-republican-hysteria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">including one who was transferred to the U.S. to be tried<\/a>, and nine have died, the most recent being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.closeguantanamo.org\/Articles\/64-Lawyers-Statement-On-Adnan-Latif-the-Latest-Prisoner-to-Die-at-Guantanamo\">Adnan Latif<\/a>, in September 2012.<\/p>\n<p><strong>40 men are still held, and five of these men were recommended for release by high-level governmental review processes under President Obama, decisions that Donald Trump has chosen to ignore since taking office in January 2017. He has only released one man since taking office, Ahmed al-Darbi, who was\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2018\/05\/04\/with-transfer-of-ahmed-al-darbi-to-saudi-arabia-guantanamos-population-drops-to-40-no-new-arrivals-on-horizon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">returned to Saudi Arabia for ongoing imprisonment in May 2018<\/a>, six weeks later than he was supposed to have been repatriated under the terms of a plea deal he agreed to four years earlier.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To join the campaign for the prison&rsquo;s closure into 2020, see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.closeguantanamo.org\/Gitmo-Clock-2018-photos\">the photos here<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.closeguantanamo.org\/Gitmo-Clock-2018-photos-2\">and also here<\/a>\u00a0of supporters with posters showing how long the prison has been open, and demanding that Donald Trump close it once and for all. under President Obama, and although no prisoners were released for 15 months from January 2011, two Uighur prisoners (Muslims from China&rsquo;s Xinjiang province) were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.closeguantanamo.org\/Articles\/49-As-Two-Uighurs-Are-Freed-in-El-Salvador-87-Men-Cleared-for-Release-Remain-in-Guantanamo\">released in April 2012<\/a>, another man, Ibrahim al-Qosi, who was given a two-year sentence after a plea deal in July 2010, was\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2012\/07\/14\/us-honors-deal-to-release-convicted-bin-laden-cook-from-guantanamo-to-sudan-87-cleared-men-still-await-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">released in July 2012<\/a>, and in September 2012, Omar Khadr, a former child prisoner, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.closeguantanamo.org\/Articles\/66-Finally-Omar-Khadr-Leaves-Guantanamo-and-Returns-to-Canada\">transferred to Canada<\/a>\u00a0to serve the rest of the sentence he negotiated as part of plea deal in October 2010.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2013, following\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.closeguantanamo.org\/Articles\/91-Why-We-Have-Cautious-Optimism-Regarding-President-Obamas-Plans-for-Guantanamo\">a promise to resume releasing prisoners<\/a>\u00a0that President Obama made in May, after the majority of the remaining prisoners had embarked on a hunger strike to remind the world of their plight, two Algerians &#8212; cleared for release in January 2010 by the inter-agency Guant\u00e1namo Review Task Force that President Obama established when he took office in January 2009 &#8212;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.closeguantanamo.org\/Articles\/100-Who-Are-the-Two-Guantanamo-Prisoners-Released-in-Algeria\">were released<\/a>, and in December 2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.closeguantanamo.org\/Articles\/112-President-Obama-Forcibly-Repatriates-Two-Algerians-from-Guantanamo\">two more Algerians were repatriated<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; although these two men didn&rsquo;t want to go home &#8212; and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.closeguantanamo.org\/Articles\/113-Who-Are-the-Two-Guantanamo-Prisoners-Released-to-Saudi-Arabia\">two Saudis were then released<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These releases were then followed by\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2013\/12\/21\/two-sudanese-prisoners-released-from-guantanamo-79-cleared-prisoners-remain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">the repatriation of two Sudanese prisoners<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; Noor Uthman Muhammed, as the result of a plea deal in February 2011, and Ibrahim Idris, who had been cleared for release by the task force, but whose eventual release was ordered by a judge after the Justice Department\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.closeguantanamo.org\/Articles\/105-Progress-on-Guantanamo\">failed to contest his habeas corpus petition<\/a>, accepting that he was severely mentally ill.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of 2013, three more men were\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2014\/01\/05\/the-last-three-uighurs-are-freed-from-guantanamo-76-cleared-prisoners-remain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">given new homes in Slovakia<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; the last of the 22 Uighurs (Muslims from China&rsquo;s oppressed Xinjiang province) whose release into the U.S. had been ordered &#8212; but then overturned &#8212; by a judge in October 2008.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2014, another Algerian &#8212; Ahmed Belbacha &#8212;\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2014\/03\/14\/long-cleared-algerian-prisoner-ahmed-belbacha-released-from-guantanamo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">was repatriated<\/a>, and on May 31, 2014,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.closeguantanamo.org\/Articles\/131-Missing-the-Point-on-the-Guantanamo-Taliban-Prisoner-Swap-and-the-Release-of-Bowe-Bergdahl\">five Taliban prisoners were released<\/a>, in Qatar, and under supervision, in exchange for the release of the sole U.S. prisoner of war in Afghanistan, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who had been held by the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani Network since 2009.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2014, Fawzi al-Odah, one of the last two Kuwaitis in Guant\u00e1namo,\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2014\/11\/06\/fawzi-al-odah-freed-from-guantanamo-returns-home-to-kuwait\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">was freed<\/a>, and, also in November 2014,\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2014\/11\/27\/who-are-the-five-guantanamo-prisoners-given-new-homes-in-georgia-and-slovakia-and-who-is-the-repatriated-saudi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">six more prisoners were released<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; three Yemenis were given new homes in Georgia, a Yemeni and a Tunisian were resettled in Slovakia, and a Saudi was repatriated.<\/p>\n<p>In December,\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2014\/12\/08\/who-are-the-six-men-freed-from-guantanamo-and-given-new-homes-in-uruguay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">six more men were released<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; four Syrians, a Palestinian and a Tunisian &#8212; who were accepted as refugees in Uruguay, and\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2014\/12\/21\/four-insignificant-afghan-prisoners-released-from-guantanamo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">four Afghans were repatriated<\/a>, and the very end of the year five more men &#8212; two Tunisians and three Yemenis &#8212; were\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2015\/01\/04\/who-are-the-five-guantanamo-prisoners-given-new-homes-in-kazakhstan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">given new homes in Kazakhstan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2015, another five men &#8212; all Yemenis &#8212;\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2015\/01\/20\/who-are-the-five-yemenis-released-from-guantanamo-and-given-new-homes-in-oman-and-estonia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">were resettled<\/a>. Four of the men were sent to Oman, while the fifth was sent to Estonia, and in June 2015 another six Yemenis\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2015\/06\/14\/who-are-the-six-yemenis-freed-from-guantanamo-and-resettled-in-oman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">were resettled in Oman<\/a>. In September 2015,\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2015\/09\/17\/fears-for-guantanamo-prisoner-released-in-morocco-but-held-incommunicado-in-a-secret-location\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">a Moroccan was repatriated<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2015\/09\/23\/abdul-rahman-shalabi-long-term-hunger-striker-repatriated-from-guantanamo-to-saudi-arabia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">also a Saudi<\/a>, who was a long-term hunger striker, and at the end of October\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2015\/11\/05\/mauritanian-cleared-for-release-since-2009-finally-repatriated-from-guantanamo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">a Mauritanian was repatriated<\/a>, and Shaker Aamer, the last British resident in the prison, was\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2015\/10\/30\/shaker-aamer-finally-freed-from-guantanamo-we-stand-with-shaker-responds-to-the-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">released and returned to the U.K.<\/a>\u00a0On November 13,\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2015\/11\/16\/five-yemenis-freed-from-guantanamo-given-new-homes-in-the-united-arab-emirates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">five Yemenis were released<\/a>, and given new homes in the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p>As 2016 began,\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2016\/01\/07\/two-yemeni-prisoners-released-from-guantanamo-to-ghana-105-men-remain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">two Yemenis were released, and given new homes in Ghana<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2016\/01\/13\/fayiz-al-kandari-is-free-the-last-kuwaiti-in-guantanamo-is-released-plus-a-saudi-now-103-men-remain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Fayiz al-Kandari, the last Kuwaiti in the prison, was released, as was a Saudi<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2016\/01\/17\/ten-yemenis-freed-from-guantanamo-given-new-homes-in-oman-now-93-men-remain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">ten Yemenis were given new homes in Oman<\/a>. On the eve of the seventh anniversary of President Obama&rsquo;s promise to close the prison within a year (on January 22), it was announced that two more men had been freed &#8212;\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2016\/01\/24\/seriously-ill-egyptian-and-a-yemeni-freed-from-guantanamo-in-bosnia-and-montenegro-another-refuses-to-leave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">an Egyptian in Bosnia, and a Yemeni in Montenegro<\/a>. In April, after over two months with no releases,\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2016\/04\/04\/who-are-the-two-libyans-freed-from-guantanamo-and-given-new-homes-in-senegal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">two Libyans were given new homes in Senegal<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2016\/04\/18\/nine-yemenis-freed-from-guantanamo-to-saudi-arabia-80-prisoners-remain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">nine Yemenis were then rehoused in Saudi Arabia<\/a>. In June,\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2016\/06\/27\/yemeni-freed-from-guantanamo-in-montenegro-29-cleared-prisoners-remain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">another Yemeni was given a new home in Montenegro<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.closeguantanamo.org\/Articles\/217-76-Men-Left-in-Guantanamo-as-Yemeni-Approved-for-Release-in-2010-Starts-New-Life-in-Italy-and-a-Yemeni-and-the-Last-Tajik-Go-to-Serbia\">in July three more men were freed<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; one to Italy, and two to Serbia.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2016, the largest single release under President Obama took place, when 15 men &#8212; 12 Yemenis and three Afghans &#8212; were released in the United Arab Emirates. Six of these men had been approved for release by Obama&rsquo;s task force in 2010, and nine others had been approved for release by Periodic Review Boards. In October, another release took place &#8212;\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2016\/10\/17\/mohamedou-ould-slahi-released-from-guantanamo-thanks-those-who-stood-by-him\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">of Mohamedou Ould Slahi<\/a>, torture victim and best-selling author, who had also been approved for release by a PRB, and in December another Yemeni approved for release by a PRB was\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2016\/12\/04\/yemeni-freed-in-cape-verde-59-men-left-in-guantanamo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">freed in Cape Verde<\/a>. As 2017 began, President Obama\u00a0<a title=\"(Opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/2017\/01\/06\/who-are-the-four-guantanamo-prisoners-freed-in-saudi-arabia-leaving-55-men-still-held\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">released four more Yemeni prisoners &#8212; to Saudi Arabia<\/a>.
